Turn left on / at Oxford Street (2025)

Hi everybody!

I have two questions about the prepositions I must use with the word "street" when I have to give or ask for a direction.

1- I'm not sure about the preposition I have to use in this sentence: Turn left ON / AT Oxford Street. Can you help me please?
2-I'm not sure about the preposition I have to use in this sentence: Go straight on and take the first street on the right. Continue straight on and the cinema is ON / AT the first street on the left.

Personally, I would say it this way:
Go straight (ahead) and then take the first street on the right. Continue straight ahead/Continue going straight and the cinema is on the first street on the left.

For the first option, they're both perfectly okay. Here in Canada, we would tend to say "on" more often than "at."

As for the second option, you should say "on." "At" doesn't make sense. You could even say "by"!

It depends on where you want to say the cinema is. The cinema may be

the street you turned right on (facing it),

the first street to the left (on the corner), or it may be somewhere else

that first street to the left.

There is a much more simple way of saying this, and it's what we would usually say in English:
"Go straight ahead and take the first right"

Quizás en el inglés británico es uso de "into" también es frecuente.

Las preposiciones todavía tienen los mismos sentidos, sea lo que sea el nombre o la descripción de la calle:

on/at Broadway
on/at the wide street after Main
on/at Fifth Street
on/at the fifth street after Main
on/at the fifth Street (after that)

I would always say 'Take the first street on the right' (BrE), never to.

Entiendo que se trata de doblar/girar al llegar a Oxford St. ¿Tú cómo lo dirías?

"Turn left on Oxford Street" supone que ya estás en Oxford Street, entonces ¿dónde tienes que girar a la izquierda, visto que muchas calles salen de Oxford Street?

"Turn left at Oxford Street" podría funcionar con tal que no estés en Oxford Street y que no se llame "Oxford Street" la calle que entrarías tras haber llegado a Oxford Street y girado a la izquierda.
Si resulta que la calle que entras al girar a la izquierda se llama Oxford Street, habría que decir "Turn left onto Oxford Street". Es lo que diría yo si Oxford Street cruzara la calle que estuviera subiendo.
