Despite facing significant challenges with injuries, Casas has showcased impressive talent when on the field, boasting a batting line of .241/.358/.452 alongside an impressive tally of 45 home runs and 120 RBIs over a span of 251 games from 2022 to 2025.
However, it’s the phrase "when healthy" that poses the biggest obstacle for him. In fact, throughout his initial four seasons in Boston, he has endured more than 80 games sidelined due to a series of injuries, including a peculiar rib cartilage issue and a severe rupture of his left patellar tendon that disrupted his momentum across two seasons. This injury history understandably raises concerns about the team's ability to count on him consistently, something that Casas himself acknowledges.
At the recent "Fenway Fest," Casas expressed confidence in his skills, asserting, "I definitely believe in my abilities and think they’re up there with the best in the game. I’ve just got to be on the field, stay healthy, and get that sample size." He continued to reflect on his performance by saying, "I’ve had good stretches as a major league player. I’ve had mostly bad ones. I see and know the habits of the best and I think I’m right there with them. I haven’t shown it on the field, but mentally, I think I still have that potential of being an All-Star-caliber player."
But will he get the chance to prove this potential in the upcoming season?
Recognizing the need for improvement, the Red Sox have taken steps to secure his position by executing a trade for Willson Contreras, a seasoned first baseman previously with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Casas understands this move. "As of right now, the way it is, he’s a better player than me and has been for his entire career," he admitted. "To upgrade at a position that has been deficient for the last two years is exactly what the team needed."
This strategic decision places the Red Sox in a stronger position moving forward, providing them with various options at both first base and designated hitter, particularly with a crowded outfield adding depth to the roster. For Casas, there will certainly be opportunities to secure playing time, and based on his current outlook, there is little doubt that he is eager to seize every chance to demonstrate his abilities.
