The Road to Success: Keep Driving's Grand Prize Victory
In a thrilling celebration of indie gaming excellence, Keep Driving, a captivating pixel-art RPG, emerged as the Grand Prize winner at the prestigious DevGAMM Awards. But here's where it gets controversial... this award wasn't just about the game's stunning visuals or engaging narrative; it was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Swedish studio, YCJY Games.
Keep Driving, a road trip adventure to a music festival, took center stage on Friday night, claiming the top prize and a cool $20,000. The DevGAMM Awards, with a total prize pool of $135,000, recognized 15 outstanding games, each with its unique charm and innovation.
Other notable winners included Despelote, a narrative masterpiece by Julian Cordero and Sebastian Valbuena, and Rockbeasts, a game that excelled in audio design by Lichthund. Promise Mascot Agency, developed by Kaizen Game Works, shone bright with the Epic Games Store Indie Spotlight award.
And this is the part most people miss... the DevGAMM Awards followed a two-day conference, attended by an impressive 1,122 individuals. The event kicked off with a talk by Chris Charla, Xbox's general manager, who shared valuable insights on common developer mistakes when launching a game. Over 60 speakers, including audio lead Raphaël Joffres, engaged attendees with their expertise.
The conference's attendee demographics were diverse, with Portugal leading the pack at 44%, followed by the UK, Poland, and Spain. Notably, 33% of attendees were women, highlighting the growing presence of female talent in the industry.
Before the DevGAMM Lisbon event, the inaugural Madeira Games Summit took place, focusing on industry leaders. Fireside chats and talks featured prominent figures like Maria Sayans, CEO of Ustwo Games, and Mariina Hallikainen, CEO of Colossal Order. This smaller summit set the stage for the larger DevGAMM conference.
